MagicClips README
This file provides tips and help in managing your MagicClips files,
especially if you have never prepared files for printing before.
At the end of this file is a Checklist you may fill out (explained in the
notes just below).
BACKGROUNDS
These backgrounds come in grayscale and full color at 150 dpi. Several
designs are 3-fold brochures, each side with its own matching design. If your
goal is B/W printing, I strongly recommend you use the grayscale version (if
any) of the backgrounds supplied and not to convert the color versions. The
grayscale versions have been optimized after conversion for B/W printing.
These files are large and consume much computer RAM. This means your work can
slow to a crawl if you do not have sufficient memory to accomodate the file.
To help speed up your work, use the low-resolution version of the file
provided in the 72DPI folder. These are For Position Only as you create the
finished design. When you are done, replace the 72DPI background with the
better resolution one, and print.
If your background is to "bleed" off the outer edges of the page, then you
must stretch and/or move the image so it extends 1/8" past that edge. The
commercial printer would then print the project on larger paper to accomodate
that image spill-over, then cut it to size after printing.
For high-volume printing from negatives, place the file in your word
processor, add your own text, and supply the file to the service bureau with
the Checklist information filled in. The service will output the negatives or
positives you need. Then give the output to a print shop for printing.
It is important to consult your printer about the job you have in mind prior
to outputting the file. Show them the Checklist and ask for their comments.
The print shop's analysis of both the file and the Checklist will give them
the information they need to give you the best service.
BUSINESS CARDS
The business card images are backgrounds for your text. The backgrounds are
presented in two versions--single card, and a 4-up version. The single cards
are Landscape orientation in order to accomodate the commercial
pre-perforated business card stock which you purchase separately. You must
enter your text and then rotate it ninety degrees. They are lower-resolution
bitmaps for home printer printing. The higher-resolution 4-up versions are
either Portrait or Landscape orientation so you can place the file in your
program and enter your text right side up. If your goal is B/W printing, I
strongly recommend you use the grayscale images supplied and not to convert
the color versions. The grayscale versions have been optimized after
conversion for B/W printing. If you need help on printing, the following
steps are for you.
The Internet folder contains .GIF versions of a few of these color files.
For printing from home printer:
1. Purchase business card stock at your local paper supply store or
stationery store. This stock has ten pre-perforated business cards arranged
to fit an 8.5 x 11" page for your printer. After printing, you carefully
separate the cards from each other.
2. Place the single business card file multiple times in your word
processor/publishing file according to the layout of the pre-perforated
business card layout. Or insert several different versions of business cards
on the same page.
3. Add the text for the cards. Some business cards will require that you
rotate text, because the Landscape orientation is designed to fit the
business card pre-perforated sheets.
4. Print out one copy for evaluation on paper.
5. Adjust and print as many copies as you need on the card stock.
For print shop printing:
1. Place the 4-up file in your word processor/publishing file.
2. Add the text for the cards.
3. Copy the file to media the service bureau uses for output (Zip disks,
etc.).
4. Print out one paper copy.
5. Print out the Checklist and fill it in.
6. Supply the file, paper copy and Checklist paper to the printer. It is
important to consult your printer about the job you have in mind prior to
outputting the file. They can evaluate the job so they can print it best. Ask
them to give you a quote and show you card stock samples.
7. Revise the file if necessary.
8. Supply the new file, paper copy and Checklist paper to the service bureau
for their evaluation and quote.
9. After it has been output, give the output to your print shop for printing.
Professional design tip: Use the same business card image on ALL your
business stationery, including envelopes, advertising, and announcements, for
a professional look. Have them printed on magnets, mugs, and other items for
promotional giveaways, all with your name and number, of course. And don't
limit yourself to calling these images "business cards." They're also good
general clip art as is, and useful for many other applications, including
background headings for Web pages. Just add titles. They are especialy
impressive as magic conventioneer lapel title pins.
GOSPEL
The Gospel images here present you with a few ideas on how to incorporate
other magic images with your message. (I chose to add Scripture to the images
because the Word of God is powerful.) The ten Gospel flyers present the full
Gospel--man's sin, his need of a Savior to save him from sin, Christ's
atoning death, burial, and resurrection, and the response of faith needed for
salvation.
The 3-panel files in the Backgrounds folder are backgrounds for the text. The
Gospel text is provided separately in text files. The backgrounds are
presented in either Portrait or Landscape orientation so you can place the
file in your program and enter text right side up. You may forego the
background and instead place images from the clipart collection around your
text. If your goal is B/W printing, I strongly recommend you use the
grayscale images supplied in the clip art collection and not to convert the
color versions. The grayscale versions have been optimized after conversion
for B/W printing.
For high quality print shop printing.
1. Place the background file in your word processor.
2. Import the Gospel text from the text file and arrange it carefully on each
panel.
3. Add extra information at the end of the text so that recipients can
contact you or the church for follow-up.
4. Copy the file to media the service bureau uses for output (Zip disks,
etc.).
5. Print out one paper copy.
6. Print out the Checklist and fill it in.
7. Supply the file, paper copy and Checklist paper to the printer. It is
important to consult your printer about the job you have in mind prior to
outputting the file. They can evaluate the job so they can print it best. Ask
them to give you a quote and show you card stock samples.
8. Revise the file if necessary.
9. Supply the new file, paper copy and Checklist paper to the service bureau
for their evaluation and quote.
10. After it has been output, give the output to your print shop for printing
Gospel flyers that complement your magic theme.
When I decided to do Gospel magic and hold my first show, I could not find
any Gospel tracts with a magic theme. So, being an experienced graphic
designer, I created several of my own. People were eager to read them because
it pertained to magic. I realized later that other Gospel magic workers could
use these as well. Thus, the MagicClips CD was born.
Headings
These images come in three versions, color with white background, color with
"MAGIC" in the background, and in B&W. Over 20 catalog titles are included,
listed below.
The Internet folder contains may of the color files in reduced size for
internet use.
The 3DFiles folder contains the original files created in Ray Dream Designer
3 and 4. If you have your own copy of Ray Dream Designer, you may open these
files and make changes to the lighting, lettering style, and so on, and then
render them as bitmap files you can import into your computer program for us.

IMAGES
Many of these images come in three versions: with white background, with
colored background, and one of these versions in grayscale. The images with a
white background are perfect for running text close to the image. If your
goal is B/W printing, I strongly recommend you use the grayscale version
supplied and not to convert the color versions. The grayscale versions have
been optimized after conversion for B/W printing.
These images are for the most part quite large, about five inches tall in
some cases (at 150 dpi), making them perfect for book covers or other large
printed material. Scaling them down can give you sharper output.
The number of business uses for these images is staggering. They may be
output by home inkjet printing for business letterheads and business cards,
'Magician's Helper' certificates, coupons, attention-getting posters,
personalized Thank You's gratefully acknowledging gigs. Print shop printing
for advertising, publicity flyers, brochures, catalogs, books, bumper
stickers, decals, buttons, Pogs, and Gospel flyers. Silk screening for
T-shirts, mugs, refrigerator magnets, many other promotional items, playing
cards (front or back), and silks. Web graphics too. For magicians, magic
shops, advertisers, and graphic artists. There is plenty of images here to
create your own business card design, decorate your resume, and make your
Gospel flyers more appealing to the audience.
The 3D images were created in Ray Dream Designer and Ray Dream Studio 4.0
(Fractal Design Corp.) They were edited in Graphics Suite Picture Publisher
(Micrographx). Other software used includes Micrographx Designer
(Micrographx), Kai's Power Tools 2.0 (MetaTools), and 3DF/X (Asymetrix), as
well as a fractal generation program. Many of the original files used to
generate the 3D images are included in the folder, 3D Models. You may
re-render these models in your own copy of Ray Dream Studio 4 (which must be
purchsed separately) to a larger size, a different angle, color, or other
arrangement. With these models, you may create your own giant-size poster
versions of these images, provided you have enough computer resources.
The Internet folder contains many of the color versions as GIF or JPEG files,
which are a smaller size for the internet.

OUTPUT CHECKLIST
Follow this checklist and give it to your printer and service bureau to
output your images successfully. Your service bureau and pritner will
understand these terms if you do not.
1. Supply all images separately from your page layout program. In other
words, give them the page layout program file containing all the images you
have placed there; and supply all the image files you used on a separate
disk. Give them the CD if necessary.
2. Do not cut and paste the images to place them into your layout. Some
service bureau imagesetters will not read them. Instead, use your layout
program's Import (or similar name) function.
3. Specify the following in your order for the service bureau. Print out this
page, fill in the blanks, and hand it to them. It is best to call the service
bureau and printer and go over the list first to make sure they are able to
output what you have. This information will familiarize the service bureau
with your job and help them give you the best service.
